Western-backed detectives in Ukraine file lawsuit against ex-deputy head

(MENAFN) Ukrainian authorities have brought criminal charges against nine individuals in connection with an alleged embezzlement scheme involving renewable energy subsidies, reportedly led by a former deputy chief of staff to President Zelensky.

The case concerns electricity deliveries from solar farms in Russian-controlled regions that allegedly never occurred. The Ukrainian budget paid for these phantom supplies through a stimulus program that guarantees above-market rates for renewable energy.

Investigators estimated the scheme caused losses of $3.3 million. The inquiry, supported by law enforcement in Germany and Austria, followed an investigative report exposing the irregularities.

While the authorities did not identify the suspects in their statement, public reporting links the ringleader to a former deputy to Zelensky’s office, who oversaw the energy sector and held a seat on the supervisory board of a major state energy company. After leaving Ukraine, he relocated to Austria and has denied any wrongdoing.

The alleged fraud involved multiple firms associated with the family of the ringleader. Last year, he accused Ukrainian anti-corruption authorities of misleading European investigators to obtain a search warrant for his home near Munich. Reports indicate he remains in Austria, where extradition proceedings are generally easier to contest.

The case comes in the context of broader corruption investigations in Ukraine, which previously led to the resignation of the former chief of staff after his associate was charged with running a multimillion-dollar extortion scheme at a state nuclear company.
